Bitcoin is the first example of a new form of life. It lives and breathes on the internet. It lives because it can pay people to keep it alive. It lives because it performs a useful service that people will pay it to perform. It lives because anyone, anywhere, can run a copy of its code. It lives because all the running copies are constantly talking to each other. It lives because if any one copy is corrupted it is discarded, quickly and without any fuss or muss. It lives because it is radically transparent: anyone can see its code and see exactly what it does.
So what exactly are the characteristics of a living organism?
1) They are made from structures called “cells.”
2) They reproduce by genetic material called “DNA.”
3) They respond to stimuli from the environment.
4) They synthesize an energy substance from the environment, and they live and grow using that energy.
We wake up, eat food, do our work & sleep. The food gets converted into energy. The energy we need to move , think, talk, do labor. Every living form on the face of this planet needs energy for it’s survival. Every DNA in this world is different, which makes us unique.
Bitcoin follows this exact same process i.e. Miners mine bitcoin blocks using electricity (energy) to generate bitcoins which gives miners an incentive to keep mining it. This energy ends up adding to the security of the whole bitcoin network. With each and every second passing bitcoin is becoming more & more secure. Bitcoin is the most secure thing this world has ever seen.
Bitcoin also follows the Natural selection as Charles Darwin proposed in his theory of evolution. When a Bitcoin network splits i.e. The DNA splits(lets say because of disagreement between the community) it forks into two similar network with a slight change in their codebase like Bitcoin core & Bitcoin cash (Their Block size, Bitcoin core has 1 MB blocks whereas Bitcoin has 32 MB blocks right now). The Natural selection says “May the fittest one survive”. So now we have two versions of Bitcoin competing against each other to become the dominant currency of the world.
Bitcoin is a software living on the internet in 1000’s of computers, aware of its existence. It can’t be changed. It can’t be argued with. It can’t be tampered with. It can’t be corrupted. It can’t be stopped. It can’t even be interrupted. If nuclear war destroyed half of our planet, it would continue to live, uncorrupted. It would continue to offer its services. It would continue to pay people to keep it alive. The only way to shut it down is to kill every server that hosts it. Which is hard, because a lot of servers host it, in a lot of countries, and a lot of people want to use it.
Realistically, the only way to kill it is to make the service it offers so useless and obsolete that no one wants to use it. So obsolete that no one wants to pay for it. No one wants to host it. Then it will have no money to pay anyone. Then it will starve to death. But that’ll never happen because people realise this is the type of money they always wanted. The most secured type of money which no individual or government can control. Welcome to the money of the machine age.
